t village of Appelscha is located on the Drents-Friese Wold: the largest contiguous forest in the Netherlands with heathland, fens, moors and a large stretch of bare, shifting sand.

From the park you literally walk into the forest with many hiking and cycling routes. Unique in the Netherlands are “the wet nose routes” where dogs are allowed to walk freely.

There is a climbing forest within walking distance. At 6 km is the Canada Lake or Aekingermeer, where you can swim in the summer. Nearby also national parks the Drentsche AA and National Park Dwingelderveld. There is in the forest the Bosbad Appelscha with all kinds of facilities and the outdoor theater De Koele located between the trees.

Appelscha has a fine TIP (tourist information point) where they like to help you on your way with everything there is to do and also here on the site you can find everything nice in the neighborhood

The village of Appelscha is located at a ‘three-country point’: Friesland, Drenthe (Drents Museum at 23 km) and Groningen. Within a kilometer you are in Drenthe, in 40 minutes in the cities of Leeuwarden and Groningen and less than an hour later in Germany. The Frisian lakes and Wadden Islands are not far away either.

Groceries can be done in the village with a completely renovated supermarket, pharmacy, pet and other stores. In Oosterwolde you can find the large retail chains like AH and HEMA but also small independent stores. Near the vacation home is a bicycle rental.
