The village of Appelschallies on the Drents-Friese Wold: the largest contiguous forest in the Netherlands with heathland, fens, peat bogs and a good deal of bare, drifting sand. From the park you literally walk into the forest with many hiking and biking trails. Unique in the Netherlands are “de natte neuzen routes” where dogs are allowed to run free.

There is a climbing forest within walking distance. At 6 km is the Canada Lake or Aekingermeer, where you can swim in summer. Nearby also national parks the Drentsche AA and National Park Dwingelderveld. There is in the forest the Bosbad Appelscha with all kinds of facilities and the outdoor theater De Koele located between the trees. The village of Appelscha is located at a ‘three-country point’: Friesland, Drenthe (Drents Museum at 23 km) and Groningen. Within a kilometer you are in Drenthe, in 40 minutes in the cities of Leeuwarden and Groningen and less than an hour later in Germany. The Frisian lakes and Wadden Islands are also not far away.
. The house is located on a cul-de-sac; there is both privacy and unobstructed views of the adjacent meadow. Don’t be surprised if there are curious pinks grazing at the fence, if a deer runs by or if you hear owls at night.
Groceries can be done in the village with a completely renovated supermarket, pharmacy, pet and other stores. In Oosterwolde you can find the big retail chains like the AH and the HEMA but also small independent stores. Near the vacation home is a bicycle rental.
